St. Louis Cardinals “4 A Greener Game”
In honor of the Cards winning the World Series, let’s see how the team manages the environmental impact of Busch Stadium given their vast number of visitors — imagine how much trash 50,000 fans leave behind every time!
To name just a few achievements, the Cardinals have won the Environmental Stewardship Award from the Missouri Waste Coalition and the Sustainability Award from The Partnership for Downtown St. Louis. The Cardinals’ “4 A Greener Game” program was launched in the 2008 season to improve recycling, waste reduction and energy efficiency. With the help of a volunteer Green Team that collects recyclables between innings, the Cardinals have diverted over 1200 tons of recycling and over 480 tons of yard waste from landfills. In two years, the stadium has increased its recycling diversion rate from 15% to 30%! Last year, Busch Stadium began retro-commissioning to be more energy efficient. This year, the Cardinals are participating again in the St. Louis Green Business Challenge, in which 79 companies have committed to improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, conserving water and other sustainability programs.
